Medical device update system

An infusion pump system comprising:

• a communication system memory configured to store one or more update files;
• and
• one or more hardware processors configured to:
• receive a message indicating a location for the one or more update files on a first network that is external to a second network of a hospital;
• download the one or more update files in the communication system memory based on the received message;
• and
• update a configuration of an infusion pump according to instructions included in the message, wherein the one or more hardware processors are independently powered from a controller of the infusion pump, wherein the controller of the infusion pump is configured to operate a display and an infusion operation of the infusion pump.

An infusion pump method comprising:

• storing one or more update files in a communication system memory;
• receiving a message indicating a location for the one or more update files on a first network that is external to a second network of a hospital;
• downloading the one or more update files in the communication system memory based on the received message;
• and
• updating a configuration of an infusion pump according to instructions included in the message, wherein the downloading is performed by one or more hardware processors that are independently powered from infusion operations of the infusion pump.
