Abstract
Modulation, preferably inhibition, of neurosignaling of a cardiac-related sympathetic nerve in the extracardiac intrathoracic neural circuit is effective in stabilizing cardiac electrical and/or mechanical function, thereby providing ways of treating or preventing cardiac dysfunction such as arrhythmias.

A device for modulating neural activity of a subject's cardiac-related sympathetic nerve in the subject's extracardiac intrathoracic neural circuit, the device comprising:
- at least one electrode configured to deliver a therapeutic electrical signal to modulate neural activity of the cardiac-related sympathetic nerve in the extracardiac intrathoracic neural circuit of the subject;
- a signal generator configured to generate and communicate the therapeutic electrical signal to the at least one electrode;
- and
- a controller in electrical communication with the signal generator, the controller configured to signal the signal generator to generate the therapeutic electrical signal having a waveform, wherein the waveform comprises at least one of an alternating current (AC) waveform or a direct current (DC) waveform.
The device of claim 60, wherein modulating the neural activity of the cardiac-related sympathetic nerve includes increasing or inhibiting the neural activity of the cardiac-related sympathetic nerve.
A method for modulating neural activity of a subject's cardiac-related sympathetic nerve in the subject's extracardiac intrathoracic neural circuit, the method comprising:
- controlling a therapeutic electrical signal to be delivered by at least one electrode, the at least one electrode configured to deliver the therapeutic electrical signal to modulate neural activity of the cardiac-related sympathetic nerve in the extracardiac intrathoracic neural circuit of the subject;
- wherein the therapeutic electrical signal comprises a waveform, the waveform comprising at least one of an AC waveform or a DC waveform.
A method for modulating neural activity of a subject's cardiac-related sympathetic nerve in the subject's extracardiac intrathoracic neural circuit, the method comprising:
- implanting in the subject a device for modulating the neural activity of the cardiac-related sympathetic nerve in the extracardiac intrathoracic neural circuit of the subject, the device comprising:
- at least one electrode configured to deliver a therapeutic electrical signal to modulate neural activity of the cardiac-related sympathetic nerve in the extracardiac intrathoracic neural circuit of the subject;
- a signal generator configured to generate and communicate the therapeutic electrical signal to the at least one electrode;
- and
- a controller in electrical communication with the signal generator, the controller configured to signal the signal generator to generate the therapeutic electrical signal having a waveform, wherein the waveform comprises at least one of an AC waveform or a DC waveform;
- and
- positioning the at least one electrode in signaling contact with the cardiac-related sympathetic nerve and in electrical communication with the device.
