Abstract
Microcatheters having enlarged distal ends with distally decreasing tapered portions are disclosed. These microcatheters can be used for various treatments within a vessel, such as treatment of a vasospasm and delivery of a liquid embolic material.
Claims20
A microcatheter, comprising:
- an elongated body including a proximal region and a distal region;
- wherein the distal region of the elongated body comprises (1) an enlarged portion having a diameter larger than the proximal region of the elongated body;
- (2) a proximal tapered portion decreasing in diameter in a proximal direction;
- and (3) a distal tapered portion increasing in diameter in the proximal direction;
- wherein the proximal tapered portion is adjacent to a proximal end of the enlarged portion;
- wherein the distal tapered portion is adjacent to a distal end of the enlarged portion;
- and,
- wherein the distal region of the elongated body comprises a detachable portion, the detachable portion being detachable from a remaining length of the elongated body.

A method for occluding a vessel, comprising:
- advancing a microcatheter within a vessel of a patient, wherein the microcatheter comprises an enlarged distal region, a delivery passage, and a distal opening in fluid communication with the delivery passage;
- positioning the enlarged distal region of the microcatheter near a region of a vessel to be occluded;
- delivering an embolic material through the delivery passage and out of the distal opening of the microcatheter;
- detaching a detachable portion from the microcatheter;
- and
- withdrawing the microcatheter.

A method for treating a vasospasm during a medical procedure, comprising:
- advancing a microcatheter within a vessel of a patient, wherein the microcatheter comprises an enlarged distal region, a delivery passage, and a distal opening in fluid communication with the delivery passage;
- wherein the enlarged distal region of the microcatheter comprises (1) an enlarged portion having a diameter larger than a proximal region of the microcatheter;
- (2) a proximal tapered portion decreasing in diameter in a proximal direction;
- and (3) a distal tapered portion increasing in diameter in the proximal direction
- positioning the enlarged distal region of the microcatheter near a region of a vessel to be occluded;
- delivering an embolic material through the delivery passage and out of the distal opening of the microcatheter;
- adhering a detachable portion of the enlarged distal region of the microcatheter to the embolic material;
- detaching the detachable portion from the microcatheter;
- and
- withdrawing the microcatheter.
