Abstract
A method can include: processing precursors, electrochemically oxidizing an anolyte and reducing a catholyte in an electrolyzer, and cooperatively using the oxidized anolyte and reduced catholyte in a downstream process. The electrolyzer can include an anode, a cathode, and a separator. The anode can include an anolyte, an electrode, an anolyte reaction region. The cathode can include a catholyte, an electrode, a catholyte reaction region.
Claims20
A method comprising:
- in an electrolyzer, oxidizing an anolyte into an oxidized anolyte and reducing a catholyte into a reduced catholyte;
- and cooperatively using the oxidized anolyte and the reduced catholyte to form a chemical species.
An electrolyzer comprising:
- an anode configured to oxidize sulfur dioxide to sulfuric acid;
- a cathode configured to reduce water to hydrogen;
- a separator disposed between the anode and the cathode, wherein the separator comprises a proton conductivity greater than about 0.01 S/cm;
- an anolyte inlet configured to introduce the sulfur dioxide in gas phase and the water, wherein a relative humidity of the sulfur dioxide is greater than 30%;
- an anolyte outlet configured to release the sulfuric acid;
- and
- a catholyte outlet configured to release the hydrogen, wherein a differential pressure between the anode and the cathode is at least 10 Bar.
