Abstract
The present invention relates to methods for preparing ceramic devices having a surface that has been activated to enhance properties including strength, porosity, and bioactivity. Activation may include forming a gel layer on the surface of a ceramic device using an alkali solution and modifying the surface using a modifying material. The invention further relates to ceramic devices prepared by the methods and methods of using the devices.
Claims26
A method of making a ceramic device, comprising:
- (i) providing a ceramic device;
- (ii) thermally treating the ceramic device at about 500-900° C.;
- (iii) exposing the ceramic device to an alkali solution to form a gel layer on the surface of the ceramic device;
- (iv) thermally treating the ceramic device at about 550-1300° C. after the exposing to the alkali solution;
- (v) exposing the ceramic device to a modifying material to form a modified surface on the ceramic device;
- and
- (vi) thermally treating the ceramic device at about 900-1300° C. during and/or after the exposing to the modifying material.

A method of increasing strength of a ceramic device, comprising:
- (i) exposing ceramic particles to an alkali solution to create a gel layer;
- (ii) drying the ceramic particles in air to dry the gel layer;
- (iii) mixing the ceramic particles with a modifying material;
- (iv) preparing the ceramic device using the mixture of step (iii) using a 3D printer or by pressing in a mold;
- and
- (v) thermally treating the ceramic device at about 800-1400° C. for 4-24 hours.
