Geometric partitioning mode and merge candidate reordering

A video coding method comprising:

• receiving data for a block of pixels to be encoded or decoded as a current block of a current picture of a video;
• signaling or receiving a selection of a partition mode from a plurality of partition modes, each partition mode segmenting the current block into at least two partitions;
• computing a cost for each merge candidate of each of the at least two partitions of the current block formed by the selected partition mode;
• selecting a set of at least two merge candidates for the at least two partitions formed by the selected partition mode based on the computed costs;
• and
• encoding or decoding the current block by combining at least two predictions of the at least two partitions based on the selected set of at least two merge candidates.

An electronic apparatus comprising:

• a video encoder or decoder circuit configured to perform operations comprising:
• receiving data for a block of pixels to be encoded or decoded as a current block of a current picture of a video;
• classifying a plurality of partition modes into a plurality of groups of partition modes, each partition mode segmenting the current block into at least two partitions;
• signaling or receiving a selection of a group of partition modes from the plurality of groups of partition modes;
• selecting a partition mode from the selected group of partition modes;
• segmenting the current block into at least first and second partitions according to the selected partition mode;
• and
• encoding or decoding the current block by combining a first prediction for the first partition and a second prediction for the second partition.

A video encoding method comprising:

• receiving data for a block of pixels to be encoded as a current block of a current picture of a video;
• classifying a plurality of partition modes into a plurality of groups of partition modes, each partition mode segmenting the current block into at least two partitions;
• signaling a selection of a group of partition modes from the plurality of groups of partition modes;
• selecting a partition mode from the selected group of partition modes;
• segmenting the current block into at least first and second partitions according to the selected partition mode;
• and
• encoding the current block by combining a first prediction for the first partition and a second prediction for the second partition.

A video decoding method comprising:

• receiving data for a block of pixels to be decoded as a current block of a current picture of a video;
• classifying a plurality of partition modes into a plurality of groups of partition modes, each partition mode segmenting the current block into at least two partitions;
• receiving a selection of a group of partition modes from the plurality of groups of partition modes;
• selecting a partition mode from the selected group of partition modes;
• segmenting the current block into at least first and second partitions according to the selected partition mode;
• and
• decoding the current block by combining a first prediction for the first partition and a second prediction for the second partition.
