Abstract

Various example embodiments for supporting optical communications in an optical communication system may be configured to leverage fiber loss properties of optical fibers to support improved optical communications in various types of optical communication systems, such as passive optical networks (PONs) or other suitable types of optical communication systems. Various example embodiments for leveraging fiber loss properties of optical fibers for improved optical communications in PONs may be configured to improve PON optical distribution network reach and loss characteristics, while achieving use of lower cost and lower power consumption solutions as compared with conventional approaches for PON systems, based on an apparatus including a receiver configured to operate using a receiver sensitivity specified for an optical module class for passive optical networks and a transmitter configured to operate using a transmit power that is less than a transmit power specified for the optical module class for passive optical networks.
