An arrangement for analyzing solids includes a laser ablation chamber, a gas flow vacuum pump, and cell and mixed gas feeds. The pump has a first sample gas tube, second mixed gas tube, nozzle, and expansion chamber. The pump is downstream of the ablation chamber. The first tube starts from the ablation chamber. The first tube terminates at the nozzle at the transition to the expansion chamber. The second tube terminates at the expansion chamber. The ablation chamber is operated at a negative pressure. In the ablation chamber, a primary ablation plasma is formed from a sample and condensed to form an aerosol and, together with the cell gas, form the sample gas. Due to the flow of the mixed gas in the second tube, the pump also carries along sample gas in the first tube. The sample and mixed gases are combined in the expansion chamber before analysis.
