Abstract
A system for preventing inadvertent actuation of a medical device. The system includes an elongate tube having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending from the proximal end to the distal end. The lumen is configured to receive a medical device configured to transition between an actuated state and an inactive state. The device further includes a detection system configured to determine a position of a distal end of the medical device relative to the distal end of the elongate tube. The detection system includes a transmitting element and a receiving element.

A medical system comprising:
- a shaft having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending from the proximal end to the distal end;
- a medical device slidable along the lumen and having a distal end configured to transition between an actuated state and an inactive state;
- and
- a detection system configured to determine a position of the distal end of the medical device relative to the distal end of the shaft, the detection system comprising:
- a transmitter,
- a receiver,
- a reflector configured to redirect energy from the transmitter to the receiver, and
- an output module operably connected to the medical device;
- wherein the output module is configured to automatically transition the distal end of the medical device between the actuated state and the inactive state based on an amount of energy detected by the receiver.
A medical system comprising:
- a shaft having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending from the proximal end to the distal end;
- a medical device including a laser fiber slidable along the lumen and configured to transition between an actuated state and an inactive state of the laser fiber;
- and
- a detection system configured to determine a position of a distal end of the medical device relative to the distal end of the shaft, the detection system comprising:
- a transmitter,
- a receiver,
- a reflector configured to redirect energy from the transmitter to the receiver,
- a signal comparator, and
- an output module operably connected to the medical device;
- wherein the output module is configured to transition the laser fiber between the actuated state and the inactive state based on a detected amount of energy.
A medical system comprising:
- a shaft having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending from the proximal end to the distal end;
- a medical device movable along the lumen and having a distal end configured to transition between an actuated state and an inactive state;
- and
- a detection system comprising:
- a transmitter;
- a receiver;
- a reflector;
- and
- an output module operably connected to the medical device;
- wherein the transmitter, the receiver, and the reflector are coupled to the shaft proximate the distal end of the shaft, the transmitter being configured to provide a signal to the reflector, and the reflector being configured to redirect the signal to the receiver;
- and
- wherein the output module is configured to automatically transition the medical device between the inactive state and the actuated state based on the signal received by the receiver.
