Detecting contiguous defect regions of a physical object from captured images of the object

A system for detecting defects on a three-dimensional physical object, comprising:

• a processor;
• and
• a computer program product comprises a computer readable storage medium having program instructions embodied therewith that when executed by the processor causes operations, the operations comprising:
• receiving images of a physical object from different perspectives capturing different views of the physical object;
• detecting defect regions in the images containing defects on surfaces of the physical object;
• determining categories of the defect regions;
• determining whether defect regions of a category have a common boundary to form at least one contiguous defect region for the category;
• determining total spatial metric of any contiguous defect regions and non-contiguous defect regions for each of the categories;
• and
• providing information on the total spatial metric for the categories to a quality assurance module to determine a quality of the physical object.

A method for detecting defects on a three-dimensional physical object, comprising:

• receiving images of a physical object from different perspectives capturing different views of the physical object;
• detecting defect regions in the images containing defects on surfaces of the physical object;
• determining categories of the defect regions;
• determining whether defect regions of a category have a common boundary to form at least one contiguous defect region for the category;
• determining total spatial metric of any contiguous defect regions and non-contiguous defect regions for each of the categories;
• and
• providing information on the total spatial metric for the categories to a quality assurance module to determine a quality of the physical object.
