Abstract
Provided herein is a see-through transparent, stable, safe and (bio)degradable hydrogel-based particulate support medium, made of calcium alginate particles. The calcium alginate particles, or hybrid hydrogel particles, are characterized by a substantially homogeneous average particle size that ranges from 0.1 micrometer to 5 micrometer.
Claims15
A process for depyrogenating xanthan gum for use as a support medium for 3D printing of biological materials, the process comprising:
- a. preparing a xanthan gum solution in an aqueous medium;
- b. treating said xanthan gum solution with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to thereby obtain a solution of NaOH-treated xanthan gum;
- c. neutralizing and removing said NaOH-treated xanthan gum by washing said solution of NaOH-treated xanthan gum with an alcohol-water washing solution, thereby affording an alcoholic gel of depyrogenated xanthan gum;
- d. isolating said alcoholic gel of depyrogenated xanthan gum from said alcohol-water washing solution, thereby obtaining depyrogenated xanthan gum.
A method for 3D printing biological materials, comprising printing an ink that comprises biological materials within a non-particulate support medium, wherein said support medium comprises an aqueous solution of xanthan gum.
A non-particulate support medium for 3D printing biological materials, comprising an aqueous solution of xanthan gum at a concentration ranging from 0.5% to 5% w/v.
