Placement of repair packets in multimedia data streams

A communication device for delivering a multimedia data stream, the communication device comprising:

• an adaptation module to:
• receive a set of configuration parameters related to the multimedia data stream;
• and
• determine a frequency for generating one or more repair packets and a placement for positioning the one or more repair packets in the multimedia data stream based on the set of configuration parameters, wherein the frequency and the placement are determined based on a priority derived from a multimedia delivery use-case;
• and
• a transmitter communicatively connected to the adaptation module to:
• generate the one or more repair packets by network coding source packets of the multimedia data stream based on the determined frequency and the placement;
• and
• transmit the network coded multimedia data stream with the repair packets to a receiving device.

A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having instructions that, when executed by a processor of a communication device, cause the processor to:

• determine a frequency for generating one or more repair packets and a placement for positioning the one or more repair packets in a multimedia data stream based on a configuration parameter related to the multimedia data stream, wherein the frequency and the placement are determined based on a priority derived from a multimedia delivery use-case;
• generate the one or more repair packets by network coding source packets of the multimedia data stream based on the determined frequency and the placement;
• and
• transmit the network coded multimedia data stream with the repair packets to a receiving device.
