Abstract
The present disclosure relates to a solvent-free composition, electrodes formed from said composition, cells formed from said electrode, battery systems including said cell and vehicles containing said battery system. The present disclosure also relates to methods of preparing said composition and electrode. The composition contains cathode active material, lithiated polymer, nitrile rubber and optional conductive additive. The electrodes formed using the composition show excellent electrochemical performance and stability including long cycle life, high capacity retention, good flexibility and good adhesion.

A method of forming a cathode, the cathode comprising a conductive foil and an electroactive layer, the method comprising:
- (i) providing a solvent-free composition comprising:
- a cathode active material;
- a lithiated polymer;
- a nitrile rubber;
- and
- optionally a conductive additive;
- and
- (ii) extruding the solvent-free composition at a temperature of from about 50 to about 250° C. to provide an extrudate, and calendering the extrudate on the conductive foil to form an electroactive layer.
A solvent-free composition comprising;
- 92-99 wt % cathode active material;
- 0.01-3 wt % lithiated polymer;
- 0.05-7 wt % nitrile rubber;
- and
- optionally 0.05-5 wt % conductive additive;
- wherein,
- the D[4,3] particle sizes for the cathode active material and the lithiated polymer are from 5:1 to 1:5.
