Active noise reduction with impulse detection and suppression

An apparatus comprising a feedforward microphone, an acoustic transducer, and a controller, wherein the feedforward microphone configured to generate a monitor signal based on captured ambient sounds, wherein the controller comprise one or more processing devices, and wherein the controller is configured to:

• generate, via a noise reduction filter, a noise reduction signal based on the monitor signal;
• generate, via a pass-through signal path, a variable pass-through signal based on the monitor signal, wherein the pass-through signal path comprises at least a variable gain amplifier, and wherein a gain of the variable gain amplifier is controlled by a detector filter coupled to the pass-through signal path;
• generate a feedforward signal based on the noise reduction signal and the variable pass-through signal;
• and
• generate an output signal based on at least the feedforward signal and an input audio signal, wherein the acoustic transducer is configured to produce an acoustic output in accordance with the output signal.
