Abstract

A mobile system and method for designing a stormwater management system using green infrastructure is described. The mobile system and method is used to (1) identify a location and quantity of stormwater runoff generated on an existing property; (2) provide a user with an optimum size and location for a rain catchment tank, rain garden, or other green infrastructure system for retaining or otherwise managing such stormwater runoff on the existing property; and (3) quantify stormwater runoff reduction potential based upon the optimized size and location of the green infrastructure. The mobile system and method utilize a mobile device, such as a tablet or smartphone, and includes aspects of data aggregation, visualization, compilation and sorting of information that can be viewed as a list, a chart, a map view, and the like, for administrative purposes, such as obtaining utility rebates or fee credits, or other green infrastructure asset management.

Dependent claims

A computer-implemented method for monitoring an impact of at least one green infrastructure project associated with a stormwater management system, the method comprising:

obtaining opportunity information associated with a captured photo of a drainage mechanism at a geolocation;
obtaining drainage area information associated with the drainage mechanism and the geolocation;
obtaining at least one classifier associated with a surrounding area terrain associated with the drainage mechanism;
obtaining a green infrastructure system selection based upon the captured photo, the drainage area information, and the classifier associated with the surrounding area terrain;
obtaining an optimal size for the green infrastructure system selection, wherein the optimal size is calculated based on an amount of impervious area associated with the opportunity information;
aggregating, in a database record of a database of a data processing system, the opportunity information, the drainage area information, the at least one classifier associated with the surrounding area terrain associated with the drainage mechanism, the green infrastructure system selection, and the optimal size;
obtaining a stormwater runoff reduction estimate derived from the database record;
and
applying at least one financial incentive value associated with the stormwater runoff reduction estimate to a utility customer account.

A data processing system for monitoring at least one green infrastructure project, the data processing system comprising:

one or more processors;
and
one or more non-transitory computer-readable media having instructions stored thereon which, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:
receiving an image of an existing drainage mechanism located on an existing property;
receiving a selection of a green infrastructure system type to include in a green infrastructure project associated with the existing drainage mechanism,
wherein the selection is based upon a drainage area associated with the existing property, at least one surrounding area terrain classifier derived from the image, and a verified amount of rainfall for the existing property, and
wherein the drainage area includes an impervious surface area and encompasses the existing drainage mechanism;
generating an optimal size for the selection of the green infrastructure system type,
wherein the optimal size is generated based upon the impervious surface area, the at least one surrounding area terrain classifier, and the verified amount of rainfall for the existing property;
and
determining at least one incentive value associated with the selection of the green infrastructure system type included in the green infrastructure project,
wherein the at least one incentive value is (1) based upon the optimal size generated for the green infrastructure system type selected for the green infrastructure project and (2) derived from customer utility fee information communicated to the data processing system over a communication link.
