Dynamic Voltage Margin Recovery

A method, comprising:

• operating, by a computing system, multiple components, wherein respective components are configured to operate in different modes with different power supply loads;
• determining, by the computing system, a first voltage margin to be included in a power supply voltage magnitude requested for the components based on current operating modes of the multiple components;
• and
• detecting, by the computing system, that a first component of the multiple components has changed its operating mode;
• and
• in response to the detecting, the computing system modifying at least one parameter of the following parameters to recover a portion of the first voltage margin:
• a power supply voltage magnitude;
• and
• an operating frequency of the computing system;
• wherein a magnitude of the modification is based on an estimated difference between a first amount of dynamic power supply voltage loss before the change in operating mode and a second amount of dynamic power supply voltage loss after the change in operating mode.

An apparatus, comprising:

• multiple components that are instances of a component design, wherein respective instances are configured to operate in different modes with different power supply loads;
• and
• control circuitry configured to:
• determine a first voltage margin to be included in a power supply voltage magnitude requested for the instances based on current operating modes of the multiple instances;
• and
• detect that a first component of the multiple instances has changed its operating mode;
• and
• in response to the detection, modify at least one parameter of the following parameters to recover a portion of the first voltage margin:
• a power supply voltage magnitude;
• and
• an operating frequency of at least a portion of the apparatus;
• wherein a magnitude of the modification is based on an estimated difference between a first amount of dynamic power supply voltage loss before the change in operating mode and a second amount of dynamic power supply voltage loss after the change in operating mode.
