Systems and methods for sampling chemical species in various environments

A cartridge sampler for collecting at least one chemical species from an environment for subsequent chemical analysis, wherein the cartridge sampler is fitted on or within a pipeline inspection tool for collecting and analyzing chemical species from an interior surface of a pipeline, riser or conduit, and wherein the cartridge sampler comprises:

• a. a sensing unit having a body and having collection media within the body for collecting chemical samples, wherein the collection media are permeable media comprising a porous filtration medium, the collection media having at least one molecule sensor thereon for sensing molecules and wherein the collection media are removable from the cartridge sampler;
• b. a sampling system adapted to sequentially sample fluid from within the environment at specified sampling times, the sampling system comprising a fluid inlet on an upstream side of the sensing unit, and a valve system adapted to provide fluid samples at the specified sampling times from the fluid inlet to collection media of the sensing unit;
• and
• c. a means for tagging a geospatial location and time that the fluid samples are provided to the collection media such that after the collection media are removed from the cartridge sampler, the location and time that the fluid samples are provided to the collection media can be determined.
