Method and system for additive manufacturing

A method for additive manufacturing a component, comprising:

• receiving, by a processor of a controller, data of the component to be additively manufactured using powder bed fusion, the data including a model of the component, the component including a first geometry different than a second geometry, the first geometry and the second geometry configured to create a thermal gradient along the component;
• defining a thermal management structure based on the thermal gradient to reduce the thermal gradient, the thermal management structure defined to surround at least a portion of the component, the thermal management structure having a first structure geometry that is different than a second structure geometry, the first structure geometry defined proximate the first geometry and the second structure geometry defined proximate the second geometry;
• and
• outputting one or more control signals, by the controller, to additively manufacture the component with the thermal management structure using the powder bed fusion.
