Abstract
A method of controlling a flow rate of gases supplied to a patient by a respiratory assistance device includes controlling the supply gases flow rate so as to deliver gases to the patient according to a predetermined gases pressure/flow rate profile for at least a portion of the breathing cycle. A profile may be achieved that provides the patient with a particular benefit or therapy.

A respiratory assistance device comprising a flow generator, the flow generator being configured to generate a flow of respiratory gases to be delivered to a patient, the flow generator being in fluid communication with a humidifier, the humidifier being configured to increase a humidity level of the flow of respiratory gases, the flow generator and the humidifier being operatively coupled to a controller configured to provide variable nasal high flow therapy, the controller controlling the flow generator to provide a first flow profile such that an inspiratory pressure is substantially constant during an inspiratory phase, the controller also controlling the flow generator to provide a second flow profile such that an expiratory pressure is higher during an expiratory phase compared to the inspiratory pressure during the inspiratory phase.
A respiratory assistance device comprising:
- a flow generator configured to generated a flow of respiratory gases that will be delivered to a patient;
- a humidifier being in fluid communication with the flow generator;
- a controller being operatively coupled to the flow generator and the humidifier, the controller being configured to provide variable nasal high flow therapy, the controller being programmed to control the flow generator to create a first flow profile with an inspiratory pressure that is substantially constant during an inspiratory phase, the controller also being programmed to control the flow generator to create a second flow profile with an expiratory pressure that is higher during an expiratory phase compared to the inspiratory pressure during the inspiratory phase,
- a pressure sensor or a flow sensor being located within the respiratory assistance device, the controller being programmed to detect the inspiratory phase and the expiratory phase based on a pressure or flow reading from the pressure sensor or the flow sensor respectively;
- and
- an inspiratory tube being in fluid communication with the humidifier, the inspiratory tube being configured to deliver gases to the patient, and the inspiratory tube comprising a heater.
