Policy control function (pcf) registration based on device type in wireless communication networks

A wireless communication network to qualify user devices for network policy association, the wireless communication network comprising:

• a control plane to:
• detect a registration request for a wireless User Equipment (UE);
• register the wireless UE for network data services;
• receive a device type indication for the wireless UE;
• determine when Policy Control Function (PCF) registration is available based on the device type indication for the wireless UE;
• when the PCF registration is available, register with a PCF, receive network policies from the PCF, and transfer a registration accept message for delivery to the wireless UE that comprises at least a portion of the network policies;
• and
• when the PCF registration is not available, forgo the PCF registration and transfer the registration accept message for delivery to the wireless UE without sending the network polices received from the PCF.

One or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media having program instructions stored thereon to qualify user devices for network policy association, wherein the program instructions, when executed by a computing system, direct the computing system to perform operations, the operations comprising:

• detecting a registration request for a wireless User Equipment (UE);
• registering the wireless UE for network data services;
• receiving a device type indication for the wireless UE;
• determining when Policy Control Function (PCF) registration is available based on the device type indication for the wireless UE;
• when the PCF registration is available, registering with a PCF, receiving network policies from the PCF, and transferring a registration accept message for delivery to the wireless UE that comprises at least a portion of the network policies;
• and
• when the PCF registration is not available, forgoing the PCF registration and transferring the registration accept message for delivery to the wireless UE without sending the network polices received from the PCF.
