Abstract
An electrospray needle comprising a coating inside the needle, wherein the coating is a non-conductive and non-ionizable organic material, and in some embodiments comprising a conductive outer coating; methods of making the electrospray needle, systems that use the electrospray needle, methods of detection using the electrospray needle, and a kit that includes the electrospray needle.
Claims20
An electrospray needle comprising:
- a hollow needle body comprising an outer surface, a fluid inlet, an outlet orifice, and an interior passage linking the fluid inlet and the outlet orifice in fluid communication, said interior passage comprising a first organic material covalently bonded to a surface of said interior passage;
- wherein the first organic material is electrically non-conductive and non-ionizable;
- wherein the fluid inlet has a first cross-sectional area, and the outlet orifice has a second cross-sectional area;
- and
- wherein the first cross-sectional area is greater than the second cross-sectional area.

An electrospray needle comprising:
- a hollow needle body comprising an outer surface, a fluid inlet, an outlet orifice, and an interior passage linking the fluid inlet and the outlet orifice in fluid communication, said interior passage comprising a first organic material covalently bonded to a surface of said interior passage;
- wherein the first organic material is electrically non-conductive and non-ionizable;
- wherein the fluid inlet has a first cross-sectional area, and the outlet orifice has a second cross-sectional area;
- wherein the first cross-sectional area is greater than the second cross-sectional area;
- and
- wherein at least a portion of the outer surface comprises a coating of an electrically conductive material.
3 more elements
A mass spectrometry system, comprising:
- a) an ion source comprising:
- i) an electrospray needle comprising:
- a hollow needle body comprising a fluid inlet, an outlet orifice, and an interior passage linking the fluid inlet and the outlet orifice in fluid communication, said interior passage comprising an interior passage surface having an organic material covalently bonded to said interior passage surface;
- wherein the organic material is electrically non-conductive and non-ionizable;
- wherein said fluid inlet has a first cross-sectional area and the outlet orifice has a second cross-sectional area;
- and
- wherein the first cross-sectional area is greater than the second cross-sectional area;
- ii) an electrode positioned with respect to the electrospray needle;
- wherein, when a sample disposed in a carrier fluid is urged through the electrospray needle toward the electrode, a voltage can be applied to the electrode thereby forming ionized molecules of an analyte in the sample exiting the outlet orifice;
- and
- b) a detector positioned with respect to the electrospray needle and the electrode to detect the ionized molecules.
