Abstract
A method for forming a protective antioxidative barrier on the furnace electrodes using a chemically altered cooling liquid containing an antioxidant additive. This method can be applied to electrodes used in electric arc furnaces and ladle metallurgy furnaces. The method can involve spraying the cooling liquid onto the electrode, thereby forming the protective antioxidative barrier and reducing the oxidation of the electrode.
Claims18
A method for protecting a furnace electrode comprising:
- (i) providing cooling water for cooling the furnace electrode;
- (ii) determining the water chemistry of the cooling water;
- (iii) selecting at least one antioxidant additive to add to the cooling water based on the determined water chemistry of the cooling water;
- (iv) combining the at least one antioxidant additive with the cooling water to form a chemically modified liquid;
- and
- (v) spraying an outer surface of the furnace electrode with the chemically modified liquid, wherein the outer surface of the furnace electrode has a temperature of at least 700° C.
