A method for making a compound of formula (I)
- wherein the method comprises contacting a compound of formula (II)
- with a squalene-hopene cyclase (SHC) enzyme comprising an amino acid sequence having at least 70% identity or similarity with the sequence of SEQ ID NO:
- 1, wherein the SHC enzyme comprises one or more amino acid substitutions relative to SEQ ID NO:
- 1 at one or more positions corresponding to position 2, 5, 35, 116, 166, 211, 212, 317, 355, 382, 399, 483, 539, and 585 in SEQ ID NO:
- 1,
- and wherein R is selected from H and a C1-C4 alkyl.
