Abstract
A method is provided that includes inserting a neurostimulator into a face of a subject and advancing the neurostimulator between a mandibular notch and a zygomatic process of a temporal bone toward a sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG), the subject identified as at risk of or suffering from dementia. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) of the subject is increased by activating the neurostimulator to drive, between first and second SPG-stimulation electrodes of the neurostimulator, alternating current configured to stimulate the SPG. Other embodiments are also described.
Claims19
A method comprising:
- inserting a neurostimulator through an external surface of a side of a face of a subject and between a mandibular notch on the side of the face and a zygomatic process of a temporal bone on the side of the face, and thereafter advancing the neurostimulator toward a sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) on the side of the face;
- and
- increasing cerebral blood flow (CBF) of the subject by activating the neurostimulator to drive, between first and second SPG-stimulation electrodes of the neurostimulator, alternating current configured to stimulate the SPG.
The method according to claim 19,
- wherein the dementia is Alzheimer's disease, and
- wherein inserting the neurostimulator comprises inserting the neurostimulator through the external surface of the side of the face of the subject identified as at risk of or suffering from Alzheimer's disease.
