Abstract
Systems, apparatuses, and methods are described for replacing at least a part of a local time shift buffer of a user device with a remote time shift buffer.
Claims20
A method comprising:
- receiving, by a time shift buffer computing device, a content item for delivery to a player device remote from the time shift buffer computing device;
- recording, by the time shift buffer computing device and in a time shift buffer associated with the content item and the player device, the content item;
- sending, to the player device and based on determining that a predetermined quantity of time has passed without receiving a request for the content item recorded in the time shift buffer, an alert indicating the time shift buffer is scheduled for deletion;
- and
- releasing, from the time shift buffer and based on an absence of additional requests for the content item after sending the alert, resources associated with the content item.

A method comprising:
- receiving, by a time shift buffer computing device and from a player device, a request to pause playback of a content item;
- copying, based on the request, a first portion of the content item from a first master pause buffer, of a plurality of master pause buffers recording the content item, wherein the plurality of master pause buffers comprise buffers having different sizes for different service levels, and wherein the first master pause buffer corresponds to a service level associated with the player device;
- updating the time shift buffer to add a second portion, of the content item, that is received by the time shift buffer computing device after the copying;
- and
- after determining that the playback of the content item, at the player device, was paused for a time threshold of the time shift buffer, automatically causing playback, at the player device, of content from the time shift buffer.

A method comprising:
- receiving, by a time shift buffer computing device and from a player device, a request to pause playback of a content item;
- copying, based on the request, a first portion of the content item from a first master pause buffer, of a plurality of master pause buffers recording the content item, to a time shift buffer, wherein the plurality of master pause buffers comprise buffers having different sizes for different service levels, and wherein the first master pause buffer corresponds to a service level associated with the player device;
- updating the time shift buffer to add a second portion, of the content item, that is received by the time shift buffer computing device after the copying;
- and
- after determining that the playback of the content item, at the player device, was paused for a time threshold of the time shift buffer, causing recording of a second portion of the content item in a local buffer of the player device.
