A system and method for capturing CO2 from air includes exposing the air to a source of water such that CO2 in the water is below equilibrium with CO2 in the air. The water may be enriched with hydroxides. In a preferred embodiment, the CO2 may be captured along with ammonia that is released from decomposing biomass using an apparatus including a first chamber receiving the water and a second chamber receiving the decomposing biomass. The first and second chambers are connected to allow transmission of air between the chambers while collectively defining an enclosed space from which air cannot escape. As the biomass decomposes, the enclosed air is enriched with CO2 and ammonia such that the CO2 in the water is below equilibrium with CO2 in the air so the water absorbs some of the CO2 in the air within the enclosed space.
