Abstract
Systems and methods for producing green hydrogen from a source material (e.g., biowaste) are contemplated. The source material is at least partially dehydrated to produce a dried intermediate and recovered water. The dried intermediate is pyrolyzed to produce syngas and a char. The recovered water is electrolyzed to produce oxygen and green hydrogen.
Claims22
A method of producing green hydrogen and clean water, comprising:
- at least partially dehydrating a source material to produce a dried intermediate and recovered water;
- using a dryer to:
- (a) receive moist hot air from drying of the source material;
- and
- (b) produce a dried hot air stream and condensed water from the moist hot air, the dried hot air stream used to dry the source material;
- wherein the condensed water is clean water;
- pyrolyzing the dried intermediate to produce a syngas and a char, wherein the step of pyrolyzing occurs within a temperature range and residence time that decomposes Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) compounds and the temperature range is 871° C.-982° C. (1600° F.-1800° F.) and the residence time is between 10 and 20 minutes;
- and
- electrolyzing the condensed water to produce oxygen and the green hydrogen.

A system for producing green hydrogen from a biowaste, comprising:
- a dryer configured to use a dried hot air stream to dry the biowaste, and produce a moist hot air stream and a dried biowaste;
- the dryer further configured to produce the dried hot air stream and condensate water from the moist hot air stream, wherein the condensate water comprises clean water;
- an electrolyzer configured to electrolyze the condensate water to produce oxygen and the green hydrogen;
- a pyrolyzer configured to pyrolyze the dried biowaste to produce a syngas and a char, wherein the pyrolyzer is configured to pyrolyze the dried biowaste between 871° C.-982° C. (1600° F.-1800° F.) and the residence time is between 10 and 20 minutes;
- and
- a co-generation facility configured to utilize the syngas to produce electricity.
