Abstract
A chemical extraction apparatus has absorbent material for absorbing or adsorbing volatile chemicals from a breath of a user. The chemical extraction apparatus is positioned within such that breaths from the user flow over the absorbent material thereby causing volatile chemicals in the breaths to absorb or adsorb into the absorbent material. The absorbent material is then analyzed to determine the amount of chemicals absorbed or adsorbed into the absorbent material. Based on such analysis, various diseases or conditions can be detected or diagnosed.
Claims17
A method for diagnosing a medical condition of a user, comprising the steps of:
- inserting a chemical extraction apparatus into an oral or nasal cavity of a user such that trace levels of chemicals from a plurality of breaths are concentrated in absorbent material of the chemical extraction apparatus;
- removing the chemical extraction apparatus from the oral or nasal cavity;
- determining an amount of at least one chemical concentrated in the absorbent material;
- and
- diagnosing the medical condition based on the determining step.
An apparatus for extracting volatile chemicals from a nasal cavity, comprising:
- a support element dimensioned to fit in the nasal cavity;
- and
- a sample element coupled to the support element, wherein the sample element has absorbent material for absorbing or adsorbing volatile chemicals from breath passing through the nasal cavity.
A method for extracting volatile chemicals from a nasal cavity, comprising the steps of:
- inserting, into the nasal cavity, absorbent material such that volatile chemicals from breaths of a user passing through the nasal cavity are absorbed or adsorbed into the absorbent material;
- securing the absorbent material such that the absorbent remains in the nasal cavity for a plurality of breaths of the user;
- and
- removing the absorbent material from the nasal cavity.
A method for extracting volatile chemicals from an animal, comprising the steps of:
- providing a chewable apparatus to an animal, the chewable apparatus having absorbent material for absorbing or adsorbing volatile chemicals from a breath of the animal;
- extracting volatile chemicals absorbed or adsorbed into the absorbent material from at least one breath of the animal while the animal is chewing the chewable apparatus;
- measuring the volatile chemicals extracted from the absorbent material;
- and
- determining a condition of the animal based on the measuring step.
A method for extracting volatile chemicals, comprising the steps of:
- receiving breath from a user via a respirator, the respirator having absorbent material for absorbing or adsorbing volatile chemicals from the breath of the user;
- extracting volatile chemicals absorbed or adsorbed into the absorbent material from the breath of the user while the covering is covering the nose and mouth of the user;
- measuring the volatile chemicals extracted from the absorbent material;
- and
- determining a condition of the user based on the measuring step.
