System and method for enhanced wastewater treatment using phototrophic organisms

An illuminated biofilm or photo-granule system 100 for enhancing wastewater treatment processes or biological culturing, the system 100 comprising:

• a. a light source 1 having a wavelength that induce at least one phototrophic microorganism growth;
• b. an optical coupling subsystem 2, the optical coupling subsystem 2 is coupled with the light source 1;
• c. a light transmitting and scattering substratum 3;
• d. one of a plurality of biofilm 4 or photo-granules 6 containing at least one phototrophic microorganism growing on the surface of the light transmitting and scattering substratum 3,
• wherein the light source 1 and the optical coupling subsystem 2 are enclosed and connected directly to the light transmitting and scattering substratum 3 using electric controls, frames, supports, electric cables, optical cables, connectors, optical splitters, and other appurtenances.
