Abstract
Antimicrobial compositions and articles are disclosed, as well as method for preparing antimicrobial compositions. Also disclosed are method for using antimicrobial compositions and articles for preventing the formation or growth of biofilms, disrupting biofilms, reducing microorganism counts, and treating infections.
Claims35
A composition comprising:
- chlorhexidine gluconate, octenidine hydrochloride, or a combination thereof;
- and
- a hydrophobic plasticizer having at least two hydrogen-bonding groups separated by greater than three consecutive atoms,
- wherein the hydrophobic plasticizer is characterized by a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance of no greater than 10 as determined using the HLB Method, and;
- wherein the hydrophobic plasticizer is capable of solubilizing chlorhexidine gluconate in an amount of at least 2 g per 100 g at a temperature of 20-23° C.
