Abstract
An insulation pad includes a binderless pack of glass fibers and an envelope around the binderless pack of glass fibers. The glass fibers are mechanically entangled by needling such that the binderless pack has a density of from 4.5 to 5.5 pounds per cubic foot. The insulation pad is used to insulate pipes and vessels.
Claims18
An insulation pad for insulating a structure at a temperature above 700° F., the insulation pad consisting of a binderless pack of glass fibers and an envelope:
- the binderless pack of glass fibers in the form of a mat with a first major surface and a second major surface and having a thickness of about 1 inch;
- wherein the glass fibers are mechanically entangled by needling such that the binderless pack has a density of from 4.5 to 5.5 pounds per cubic foot;
- wherein the glass fibers have a diameter range of from 15 HT to 19 HT;
- and
- the envelope forming the exterior of the insulation pad and disposed around the exterior of the binderless pack of glass fibers wherein the envelope contacts both the first major surface and the second major surface of the binderless pack;
- wherein the envelope is closed by stitching and at least one stitch passes through the envelope and the pack.
An insulated pipe comprising:
- a pipe having an outer surface with a temperature above 500° F.;
- an insulation pad disposed directly on the outer surface of the pipe, the insulation pad comprising only a binderless pack of glass fiber and an envelope:
- the binderless pack of glass fibers in the form of a mat with a first major surface and a second major surface and;
- wherein the glass fibers are mechanically entangled by needling such that the binderless pack has a density of from 4.5 to 5.5 pounds per cubic foot;
- wherein the glass fibers have a diameter range of from 15 HT to 19 HT;
- and
- the envelope forming the exterior of the pad and disposed around the exterior of the binderless pack of glass fibers;
- wherein the envelope is closed by stitching and at least one stitch passes through the envelope and the pack.
A pipe insulation pad for use in temperatures at or above 500° F. surface temperature, the insulation pad consisting of a fibrous insulation pack and an envelope:
- the fibrous insulation pack having a first major surface, a second major surface, and an R value (hr-ft2 °F/BTU) of between 4.4 and 5 at 75° F., between 2.5 and 4 at 300° F., between 2.0 and 3.0 at 500° F., and between 1.4 and 2.0 at 700° F.;
- the envelope forming the exterior of the pad and disposed around the fibrous insulation, wherein the envelope contacts both the first major surface and the second major surface;
- wherein the envelope contacts both the first major surface and the second major surface;
- wherein the envelope is closed on all sides around the fibrous insulation pack;
- and
- wherein the envelope is closed by stitching and at least one stitch passes through the envelope and the pack.
