Orchestration of software releases on a cloud platform

A non-transitory computer readable storage medium for storing instructions that when executed by a computer processor cause the computer processor to perform steps for deploying software artifacts for services executing in data centers configured on a cloud platform, the steps comprising:

• configuring a datacenter on a cloud platform based on a declarative specification specifying a hierarchy of datacenter entities;
• receiving a request to build a software artifact for deploying on one or more target datacenter entities of the datacenter configured on the cloud platform;
• receiving a release configuration specifying one or more target datacenter entities for deploying the software artifact, the release configuration using a variable representing a placeholder for a version of the software artifact to be deployed on the one or more target datacenter entities;
• compiling the release configuration to generate an execution plan including a version map for deploying the software artifact in the datacenter, the compiling replacing the variable with a specific version of the software artifact in the version map;
• generating a pipeline based on the version map;
• and
• executing the pipeline to perform a release of the software artifact on the target datacenter entities.

A computer system comprising:

• a computer processor;
• and
• a non-transitory computer readable storage medium for storing instructions that when executed by the computer processor, cause the computer processor to perform steps for configuring data centers in a cloud platform, the steps comprising;
• configuring a datacenter on a cloud platform based on a declarative specification specifying a hierarchy of datacenter entities;
• receiving a request to build a software artifact for deploying on one or more target datacenter entities of the datacenter configured on the cloud platform;
• receiving a release configuration specifying one or more target datacenter entities for deploying the software artifact, the release configuration using a variable representing a placeholder for a version of the software artifact to be deployed on the one or more target datacenter entities;
• compiling the release configuration to generate an execution plan including a version map for deploying the software artifact in the datacenter, the compiling replacing the variable with a specific version of the software artifact in the version map;
• generating a pipeline based on the version map;
• and
• executing the pipeline to perform a release of the software artifact on the target datacenter entities.
