Method and system for generating display images of effect coatings

A system for displaying the appearance of an effect coating on the screen of a display device, said system comprising:

• a communication interface for providing at least one digital representation of an effect coating to a processor, each digital representation including CIEL*a*b* values of the effect coating obtained at a plurality of measurement geometries, wherein the plurality of measurement geometries comprises at least one gloss measurement geometry and at least one non-gloss measurement geometry;
• a display device comprising a screen;
• optionally an interaction element for detecting a user input;
• and
• a processor in communication with the communication interface, the interaction element and the display device, the processor programmed to:
• receive via the communication interface the at least one digital representation of an effect coating;
• generate color image(s) by calculating corresponding CIEL*a*b* values for each pixel in created color image based on
• an ordered list of measurement geometries generated from the received digital representation(s) and
• the received digital representation(s) or—if at least one L*value included in at least one provided digital representation is greater than 90—scaled digital representation(s);
• and
• generate appearance data of the effect coating(s) by adding a texture layer pixel-wise to each generated color image using a lightness scaling factor sL, an aspecular-dependent scaling function sfaspecular and optionally a texture contrast scaling factor se;
• wherein the display device receives the generated appearance data of the effect coating(s) from the processor and displays the appearance of the effect coating(s).
