Abstract

A method for computation on distributions of data, the method comprising providing a microarchitecture comprising: a first register containing data items; a second register containing distribution data representing distributions that are uncertainty representations associated with respective said data items; a first arithmetic logic unit for executing arithmetic on data items selected from the first register; a second arithmetic logic unit for executing arithmetic on distribution data selected from the second register; the method comprising the following steps implemented by the microarchitecture: executing, by the first arithmetic logic unit, an arithmetic operation on data items selected from the first register, and outputting the result; executing, by the second arithmetic logic unit, an arithmetic operation on distribution data representing distributions selected from the second register that are associated with the data items selected from the first register, and outputting the result; wherein the arithmetic operation executed on the distribution data selected from the second register is the same as the arithmetic operation executed on the data items selected from the first register thereby to generate further distribution data representing uncertainty associated with result of the arithmetic operation executed on the data items selected from the first register.

A method for processing digitally encoded data computation on distributions of data by a processor that includes a microarchitecture comprising a first register containing at least one data item, a second register containing distribution data representing distributions that are uncertainty representations associated with the at least one data item, a first arithmetic logic unit for executing arithmetic on the at least one data item selected from the first register, and a second arithmetic logic unit for executing arithmetic on the distribution data selected from the second registers, the method comprising the operations of responding to an instruction to be executed by the processor by:

executing, by the first arithmetic logic unit, a first arithmetic operation on the at least one data item selected from the first register, and outputting the result;
executing, by the second arithmetic logic unit, the first arithmetic operation on the distribution data representing distributions selected from the second register, wherein the distribution data is associated with the at least one data item selected from the first register, and outputting the result
comprising further distribution data representing uncertainty associated with the result of the arithmetic operation executed on the at least one data item selected from the first register.

A microarchitecture for performing one or more computations on distributions of data comprising:

a first register configured for containing data items;
a second register configured for containing distribution data representing distributions that are uncertainty representations associated with respective ones of said data items;
a first arithmetic logic unit configured for executing one or more arithmetic operations on data items selected from the first register;
a second arithmetic logic unit configured for executing one or more arithmetic operations on distribution data selected from the second register;
the microarchitecture configured to:
cause the first arithmetic logic unit;
to execute an arithmetic operation on one or more data items selected from the first register, and output the result;
cause the second arithmetic logic unit;
to execute an arithmetic operation on the distribution data, and outputting the result comprising further distribution data representing uncertainty associated with result of the arithmetic operation executed on the data items selected from the first register;
wherein the arithmetic operation executed on the distribution data is substantially the same as the arithmetic operation executed on the data items selected from the first register.
