A system for extracting joint implants from a bone comprising:
- a centralized computing system comprising:
- a CAD software program;
- a computer readable medium storing instructions;
- a processor;
- and
- a database comprising an implant design data;
- a hip femoral implant component comprising a bone engaging surface, a neck, and a trunnion;
- wherein the implant design data includes data of the hip femoral implant component;
- a robotic arm in communication with the centralized computing system, the robotic arm comprising an implant extraction cutting tool;
- and
- an implant localization device in communication with the centralized computing system, the implant localization device comprising:
- a coupler configured to couple to the implant component via friction engagement, the coupler comprising a sleeve configured to receive the trunnion, wherein, when the trunnion is received into the sleeve, the sleeve and trunnion frictionally engage one another to fix the coupler in a known, pre-determined position and orientation, relative to the implant component;
- and
- a positioning system comprising one or more sensors in communication with the centralized computing system, wherein the coupler and the positioning system are in a fixed position and orientation, relative to one another, such that engagement of the coupler with the implant component fixes the positioning system in space, in a known, pre-determined position and orientation, relative to the implant component,
- wherein the localization device is not connected to the robotic arm,
- wherein when the instructions are executed by the processor, the centralized computing system:
- determines a real-time position and orientation of the positioning system based on data from the positioning system,
- calculates a real-time position and orientation of the implant component, based on the real-time position and orientation of the positioning system without registering the bone or using additional reference points on the bone, wherein the fixed spatial relationship between the positioning system and the implant component, combined with the real-time position and orientation of the positioning system, eliminates the need for registration of the bone and use of additional reference points on the bone to calculate the real-time position and orientation of the implant component,
- analyzes the implant design data via the CAD software program to render accurate dimensional data of the hip femoral implant component, and
- provides real-time instructions to the robotic arm to extract the femoral implant component from the bone, said real-time instructions being based on the dimensional data and real-time position and orientation of the implant component, and
- wherein the localization device remains coupled to the implant component while the implant extraction cutting tool is used by the robotic arm to extract the implant component from the bone.
