An acoustic wave applicator for medical and non-medical application of acoustic waves, including shockwave applications, couples to a sound dampening device that reduces noise produced by an acoustic wave source that is sealed with fluid in the applicator by an applicator membrane.

An acoustic wave noise dampening device comprising an annular shape and having an upper opening configured to receive at least a top portion of an acoustic wave applicator membrane and further configured to reduce acoustic wave noise.
An apparatus comprising an acoustic wave source and fluid sealed within an applicator membrane and a noise dampening element surrounding at least a portion of the applicator membrane.
