Host Virtual Machine Domain Name System (DNS) Cache Enabling DNS Resolution During Network Connectivity Issues

A method comprising:

• receiving, by a domain name system (DNS) forwarder implemented by an operating system of a host device, a DNS request from a virtual environment executed by the operating system of the host device, the DNS request comprising a domain name;
• determining, by the DNS forwarder, a DNS resolver located separately from the DNS forwarder is unreachable;
• in response to the determining the DNS resolver is unreachable, identifying, by the DNS forwarder, a DNS record corresponding to the domain name stored within a DNS local cache implemented by the host device, the DNS record comprising a DNS response associated with the domain name, wherein the DNS forwarder does not perform recursive DNS searches in response to determining the DNS record has expired;
• and
• providing, by the DNS forwarder, the DNS response to the virtual environment in response to the DNS request.

A device comprising:

• a processing system;
• and
• memory comprising computer executable instructions that, when executed, perform operations comprising:
• receiving, by a domain name system (DNS) forwarder implemented by the device, a DNS request from a virtual environment executed by the device, the DNS request comprising a domain name, the device further implementing a DNS local cache;
• prior to searching the DNS local cache for a DNS record corresponding to the domain name, determining, by the DNS forwarder, a DNS resolver located separately from the device is unreachable;
• in response the determining the DNS resolver is unreachable, identifying, by the DNS forwarder, the DNS record is stored within the DNS local cache, the DNS record being unexpired and comprising an IP address associated with the domain name;
• and
• providing, by the DNS forwarder, the IP address to the virtual environment in response to the DNS request.
