Solving systems of linear equations using mixed precision

A system comprising:

• a memory device;
• and
• one or more processing units coupled with the memory device, the one or more processing units are configured to perform a method of computation, the method comprising:
• receiving, by a requesting device, a system of linear equations;
• computing a solution to the system of linear equations by a flexible iterative algorithm, wherein the computing includes, for each iteration:
• determining a most computationally expensive operation of the iteration,
• mapping the most expensive operation to a low precision format, and performing the most expensive operation according to a low precision;
• performing other operations of the iteration according to a high precision;
• and
• returning the solution to the requesting device.

A computer program product comprising a computer-readable memory that has computer-executable instructions stored thereupon, the computer-executable instructions when executed by a processor cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

• receiving, by a requesting device, a system of linear equations;
• computing a solution to the system of linear equations by a flexible iterative algorithm, wherein the computing includes, for each iteration:
• determining a most computationally expensive operation of the iteration,
• mapping the most expensive operation to a low precision format, and
• performing the most expensive operation according to a low precision;
• performing other operations of the iteration according to a high precision;
• and
• returning the solution to the requesting device.
