Abstract
Materials and methods for enhancing the effectiveness of proton radiation therapy (e.g., high linear energy transfer (LET) proton radiation therapy) against tumor cells are provided herein.
Claims20
A method for sensitizing tumor cells to proton radiation, the method consisting essentially of:
- contacting the tumor cells with a composition comprising one or more pharmaceutically acceptable carriers and genistein, wherein the genistein is present in the composition at a concentration of about 100 mg/mL to about 500 mg/mL, and
- contacting the tumor cells with the proton radiation, wherein the genistein is effective to sensitize the tumor cells to the proton radiation.
A method for treating a mammal identified as having a solid tumor and slated to undergo treatment with proton radiotherapy, the method consisting essentially of administering to the mammal a composition comprising one or more pharmaceutically acceptable carriers and genistein at a concentration of about 100 mg/mL to about 500 mg/mL, wherein the genistein is effective to sensitize cells of the solid tumor to the proton radiation.
