Sternum fixation device and method

A bone plate assembly, comprising:

• a plate having a plurality of apertures formed through the thickness of the plate, with at least two of the plurality of apertures being positioned proximal to lateral edges on opposing sides of the plate;
• and
• one or more locking fasteners each having a first end and a second end opposite the first end, wherein the one or more locking fasteners can be positioned around a portion of bone, wherein the first end can be inserted through a first aperture of the plurality of apertures, wherein the second end can be inserted through a second aperture of the plurality of apertures, and wherein the first end and the second end can each be locked into the plate.
