Abstract
In various examples, the ride quality of an autonomous vehicle is improved by selecting a lateral lane position based at least in part on measured road-condition information. In various examples, information describing the condition of a road is obtained by measuring vehicle motion and road noise using sensors on the vehicle. This information is stored in association with the lateral lane position of the vehicle to produce a profile describing expected ride quality as a function of lateral lane position. In some examples, this information is uploaded and aggregated on a remote server to produce a lateral profile of road condition using information collected by many vehicles.
Claims20
A computer-implemented method, comprising:
- using one or more sensors on a vehicle to obtain road-condition information;
- determining a lateral position of the vehicle within a lane of travel;
- storing, in a physical memory device, the road-condition information in association with the lateral position;
- determining a target lateral position within the lane of travel using the stored road-condition information;
- and
- causing the vehicle to be moved to the target lateral position within the lane of travel.
A system, comprising:
- one or more processors;
- memory that stores computer-executable instructions that, if executed, cause the one or more processors to:
- obtain information that describes a relationship between a lateral position of a vehicle within a lane, and a road condition;
- determine a target lateral position within the lane using the information;
- and
- cause the vehicle to be move longitudinally along the lane at the target lateral position within the lane.
A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing thereon executable instructions that, as a result of being executed by one or more processors of a computer system, cause the computer system to at least:
- obtain, via a computer network, a plurality of road-condition samples from a plurality of vehicles, each road-condition sample having an associated road segment and lateral lane position;
- calculate a road-condition profile for a lane of a road segment using the plurality of road-condition samples;
- and
- in response to a request, provide the road-condition profile.
