Systems and methods for battery thermal management on a vehicle

An electrified vehicle comprising:

• an energy storage system including a battery disposed within a battery housing;
• and
• a control system configured to:
• detect an onset of a battery thermal event during a charging session of the energy storage system with an external power supply;
• in response to the onset of the battery thermal event being detected, perform a first action including at least one of:
• (a) stopping accepting a charge from the external power supply;
• (b) reversing a flow of electricity and exporting energy back to the external power supply;
• or
• (c) activating an alerting device at least one of (i) on the electrified vehicle or (ii) that is remote from the electrified vehicle;
• and
• in response to the battery thermal event continuing to progress following the first action, perform a second action including at least one of:
• (d) ejecting a charging plug and autonomously driving the electrified vehicle away from the external power supply;
• (e) running an electrically-operable component of the electrified vehicle to drain a state of charge of the battery;
• (f) deluging the battery housing with a fluid;
• or
• (g) ejecting or dropping at least one of the battery or the battery housing from the electrified vehicle.

A method for mitigating a battery thermal event during a charging session for an electrified vehicle, the method comprising:

• detecting, by one or more processing circuits, an onset of the battery thermal event during the charging session of an energy storage system of the electrified vehicle with an external power supply;
• in response to detecting the onset of the battery thermal event, performing, by the one or more processing circuits, a first action including at least one of:
• (a) stopping accepting a charge from the external power supply;
• (b) reversing a flow of electricity and exporting energy back to the external power supply;
• or
• (c) activating an alerting device at least one of (i) on the electrified vehicle or (ii) that is remote from the electrified vehicle;
• and
• in response to the battery thermal event continuing to progress following the first action, performing, by the one or more processing circuits, a second action including at least one of:
• (d) ejecting a charging plug and autonomously driving the electrified vehicle away from the external power supply;
• (e) running an electrically-operable component of the electrified vehicle to drain a state of charge of a battery of the energy storage system;
• (f) deluging a battery housing of the energy storage system within which the battery is disposed with a fluid;
• or
• (g) ejecting or dropping at least one of the battery or the battery housing from the electrified vehicle.
