Abstract
A bearing seal includes a seal case, a sleeve, and a thrust bumper that is disposed between the seal case and the sleeve and that is composed of a material that is at least 90% polytetrafluoroethylene by weight. The thrust bumper has an initial axial thickness that defines a spacing between the seal case and the sleeve when the seal case and the sleeve are compressed together during assembly of the bearing seal. The thrust bumper has a modified axial thickness less than the initial axial thickness after a break-in phase of the bearing seal.
Claims14
A bearing seal, comprising:
- a seal case;
- a sleeve;
- and
- a thrust bumper disposed between the seal case and the sleeve, the thrust bumper having an initial axial thickness that defines a spacing between the seal case and the sleeve when the seal case and the sleeve are compressed together during assembly of the bearing seal, the thrust bumper having a modified axial thickness less than the initial axial thickness after a break-in phase of the bearing seal, the thrust bumper being composed of a material that is at least 90% polytetrafluoroethylene by weight.
A thrust bumper for a bearing seal comprising a seal case and a sleeve, the thrust bumper being attachable to the seal case adjacent to the sleeve, the thrust bumper comprising:
- a ring composed of a material that is at least 90% polytetrafluoroethylene by weight, the ring having an initial axial thickness that defines a spacing between the seal case and the sleeve when the seal case and the sleeve are compressed together during assembly of the bearing seal, and the ring having a modified axial thickness less than the initial axial thickness after a break-in phase of the bearing seal.
