Abstract

A system for forming slots in a coating present on a component includes an electromagnetic radiation beam emitting device having a base, an arm coupled to the base, and a scan head coupled to the arm. The scan head is configured to emit an electromagnetic radiation beam, with at least one of the arm or the scan head being moveable to provide the scan head with motion about at least three axes relative to the component. The system also includes a computing system configured to control an operation of the arm to move a position of the electromagnetic radiation beam relative to a three-dimensional surface of the component such that material is ablated from a coating on the three-dimensional surface to form the slot pattern in the coating.
