Communication protocol for inference of physical slot identifier by baseboard management controller of blade server

A method comprising:

• receiving, by a chassis management controller (“CMC”) of a server chassis, a request frame broadcast over a broadcast domain from a baseboard management controller (“BMC”) of a blade server installed in the server chassis;
• sending, by the CMC, a MAC address of the BMC over an out-of-band pathway to a switch module connected to the CMC by a network segment;
• receiving, by the CMC, a port interface from the switch module over the out-of-band pathway;
• determining, by the CMC, a physical slot ID corresponding to the port interface;
• and
• broadcasting, by the CMC, a response frame over the broadcast domain.

A baseboard management controller (“BMC”) of a blade server installed in a server chassis, comprising:

• one or more processors;
• and
• one or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing computer-executable instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:
• broadcast a request frame over a broadcast domain configured by a switch module;
• receive a response frame broadcast over the broadcast domain by a chassis management controller (“CMC”) of the server chassis;
• and
• parse a Type-Length-Value (“TLV”) sequence encoding a physical slot ID from the response frame.
