Multicast flow restoration following network failure detection

A system comprising:

• a network controller connected to a network of network devices,
• wherein the network controller comprises memory configured to store processor-executable instructions and one or more processors configured to execute the processor-executable instructions to perform a method for multicast flow restoration, the method comprising:
• detecting a network failure being experienced on the network of network devices;
• identifying a multicast flow impacted by the network failure;
• and
• restoring the multicast flow, wherein restoring the multicast flow comprises:
• obtaining a filtered network topology map that excludes at least a subset of network devices in the network or a subset of network links in the network based on a maximum multicast flow bandwidth associated with the multicast flow and based on the detected network failure;
• traversing the filtered network topology map from a source node to each destination node of a plurality of destination nodes to identify a multicast distribution tree for the multicast flow;
• editing an implementation of the multicast flow on the network based on the multicast distribution tree;
• and
• updating an information entry of provisioned multicast flow information for the multicast flow to reflect the multicast distribution tree.

A non-transitory computer readable medium (CRM) comprising computer readable program code, which when executed by a computer processor, causes the computer processor to:

• obtain an aggregated network state of a network, the network comprising a set of network devices and the aggregated network state of the network comprising a network device state of the set of network devices;
• obtain an expected network device state of the set of network devices;
• obtain an identifier mapped to a network failure being experienced on the network based on a comparison of the network device state in the aggregated network state to the expected network device state, the identifier indicating at least one of a network link or a network device in the network associated with the network failure;
• obtain provisioned multicast flow information for the network, wherein the provisioned multicast flow information comprises a set of information entries each corresponding to a provisioned multicast flow and each containing a source network address associated with a source network endpoint from which the provisioned multicast flow originates, a destination network address associated with each destination network endpoint on which the provisioned multicast flow terminates, and a multicast distribution tree for the provisioned multicast flow;
• and
• restore a given multicast flow identified, as being impacted by the network failure, by a given information entry in the set of information entries using the identifier.
