Abstract
A cathode catalyst layer includes a support substrate having a pore-free outer surface region and porous surface region having a plurality of pores, each of the plurality of pores having a cavity defined by a wall, a first electrocatalyst, and a second electrocatalyst being different from the first electrocatalyst, the first electrocatalyst having a plurality of particles attached to the pore-free outer surface region and the second electrocatalyst having a plurality of particles housed within the cavities of the plurality of pores.
Claims20
A cathode catalyst layer comprising:
- a support substrate having a pore-free outer surface region and porous surface region having a plurality of pores, each of the plurality of pores having a cavity defined by a wall;
- a first electrocatalyst;
- and
- a second electrocatalyst being different from the first electrocatalyst, the first electrocatalyst having a plurality of particles attached to the pore-free outer surface region and the second electrocatalyst having a plurality of particles housed within the cavities of the plurality of pores.
A porous support substrate comprising:
- a pore-free surface region;
- a porous surface region having a plurality of pores;
- first electrocatalyst particles adhered to the pore-free surface region;
- and
- second electrocatalyst particles housed within the plurality of pores, the second electrocatalyst particles being different from the first electrocatalyst particles.
An electrochemical cell comprising:
- an anode;
- a membrane;
- and
- a cathode having a cathode catalyst layer comprising a first electrocatalyst and a second electrocatalyst different than the first electrocatalyst, the first electrocatalyst located on a non-porous surface of a support substrate and the second electrocatalyst located in porous cavities of the support substrate.
