Method and apparatus for fetching gradient data for federated learning process

An apparatus for wireless communication by a user equipment (UE), comprising:

• a memory;
• and
• at least one processor coupled to the memory, the at least one processor configured:
• to receive, from a network device, a request to initiate gradient computations for a round of federated learning;
• to compute gradients in response to receiving the request to initiate gradient computation;
• to inform the network device of availability of the gradients;
• to receive, from the network device, information to enable transfer of the gradients to the network device;
• and
• to transfer the gradients to the network device in response to receiving the information to enable transfer.

A method of wireless communication by a network device, comprising:

• transmitting a request to initiate gradient computations for a round of federated learning;
• receiving a notice of availability of computed gradients in response to the request to initiate gradient computation;
• transmitting information to enable transfer of the computed gradients from a user equipment (UE) to the network device;
• and
• receiving the computed gradients.
