Abstract
An ultrasonic surgical instrument comprises a cylindrical shaft and a blade at a distal or free end of the shaft, the blade being unitary and continuous with the shaft, without an intervening joint. The shaft has a longitudinal axis and the blade includes a flat or planar blade body with a proximal end eccentrically disposed relative to the shaft axis. Thus, the blade body or at least a proximal end portion thereof is disposed eccentrically relative to the shaft. The blade in its entirely may be inclined relative to the shaft axis or extend parallel thereto.
Claims24
An ultrasonic surgical instrument comprising a cylindrical shaft having a longitudinal axis and a blade with a flat or planar blade body at a distal or free end of said shaft, said blade body having two major lateral surfaces parallel to one another, said blade body being provided in at least one of said two major lateral surfaces with a tapered longitudinal groove having a depth and cross-sectional area each varying with distance along said groove.

An ultrasonic surgical instrument comprising:
- a shaft having a longitudinal axis, an outer surface and an end face at a distal or free end of said shaft, said shaft having a longitudinal channel or bore extending to at outlet in said end face;
- a blade connected to and contiguous with said distal or free end of said shaft at said distal end face;
- and
- a transversely enlarged connector portion configured for attachment to an electromechanical transducer device,
- wherein:
- said shaft extends in a straight-line or linear configuration from said transversely enlarged connector portion at a proximal end to said blade at said distal or free end of said shaft;
- said blade has a pair of major lateral surfaces and a through hole extending between said major lateral surfaces, said through hole being located distally of and spaced from said end face of said shaft;
- said blade is provided in one of said major lateral surfaces with a first groove contiguous and communicating with said through hole;
- said blade is provided in another one of said major lateral surfaces with a second groove contiguous and communicating with said through hole;
- and
- one of said first groove and said second groove extends between said outlet and said through hole and the other of said first groove and said second groove extends away from said through hole on a distal side thereof, opposite said outlet.
An ultrasonic surgical instrument comprising:
- a cylindrical shaft having a longitudinal axis, a cylindrical outer surface and an end face at a distal or free end of said shaft;
- a blade connected to and contiguous with said distal or free end of said shaft at said distal end face;
- and
- a connector portion configured for attachment to an electromechanical transducer device,
- said shaft extending in a straight-line or linear configuration from said connector portion at a proximal end to said blade at said distal or free end of said shaft,
- said blade including a flat or planar blade body extending at an angle with respect to said axis,
- said blade body extending only within a cylindrical envelope, inclusive of said cylindrical envelope, that is coaxial and co-cylindrical with said cylindrical outer surface of said shaft.
