Customized data scanning in a heterogeneous data storage environment

A method, comprising:

• receiving, by one or more hardware processors from a device, a request for detecting data of interest within a plurality of databases;
• performing, by the one or more hardware processors, a first scanning on each database in the plurality of databases according to a first scan setting;
• deriving, by the one or more hardware processors, a data fingerprint associated with each database in the plurality of databases based on the first scanning;
• selecting, by the one or more hardware processors from the plurality of databases, a subset of databases based on the data fingerprint associated with each database in the plurality of databases;
• performing, by the one or more hardware processors, a second scanning on the selected subset of databases according to a second scan setting, wherein the second scan setting requires scanning of a larger portion of data within a database than the first scan setting;
• and
• determining, by the one or more hardware processors, whether any one of the plurality of databases includes the data of interest based on the first scanning and the second scanning.

A non-transitory machine-readable medium having stored thereon machine-readable instructions executable to cause a machine to perform operations comprising:

• receiving, from a device, a request for classifying data within a data storage;
• selecting, from a plurality of data records within the data storage, a first subset of data records;
• analyzing the first subset of data records;
• deriving a data fingerprint for the data storage based on the analyzing;
• determining whether to analyze a second subset of data records from the plurality of data records based on the derived data fingerprint;
• and
• classifying the data in the data storage as a first data classification based at least in part on the analyzing of the first subset of data records and/or the second subset of data records.
